During last month's Lake Hopatcong Commission meeting, representatives from the New Jersey State Police, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and Hopatcong Police Department presented a summary of their 2023 activity and their strategy for ensuring public safety on the lake throughout the 2024 season.
The extensive use of Lake Hopatcong, particularly on summer weekends, has been well documented and safety and noise issues have emerged as major concerns over the years. In response, a notable collaboration has evolved to address these challenges.
Under the leadership of the New Jersey State Police, a joint effort involving multiple organizations now patrols the lake. In addition to the State Police boats stationed at their barracks in Great Cove, the Morris County Sheriff's Office also maintains two boats and a jet ski, which are docked at the Windlass Restaurant. Furthermore, local municipalities have been training their officers in marine operations under the guidance of the State Police, enabling them to rotate shifts alongside troopers aboard their boats.
New this year, an agreement between the NJ State Park Police and the Hopatcong Police Department is in the works to provide a patrol boat for Hopatcong officers to strengthen police presence, especially on busy summer weekends when 400-600 boats can be moored in Byram Cove alone.
Another focus emphasized at the meeting was on educational efforts. The various police organizations recognize that a good portion of their work lies in providing education to bridge knowledge gaps and rectify improper boating practices. To this end, the state police produced a series of educational videos to spread the word on such topics as safe vessel operation tips, boating equipment, personal watercraft safety, anchoring tips and techniques, and watersport safety tips. We extend our gratitude to the New Jersey State Police, the Morris County Sheriff's Office, the local police departments, and all the dedicated troopers and officers who will be patrolling Lake Hopatcong in the upcoming year to ensure a safe and enjoyable season on the lake.
