The museums managed by the Roxbury Historic Trust are adding some special features to the Sunday, August 10, opening. In addition to tours of the King Store and Louise King House, including the replica schoolroom and little girl’s bedroom, held from 1 to 4 p.m., the Trust will hold an ice cream social.

In addition to offering delicious summer treats, the trust will have lawn games such as crochet, spinners showing off their talents on the porch of the King House. The beautiful lawn between the store and home, with its majestic copper beech tree, is the perfect setting for enjoying ice cream, playing croquet and learning about the spinners’ craft. The spinners come from around the area and demonstrate at many historic sites.

Dulcimer music will be played by Kate Gordon of Stillwater.

The historic site, along with the Silas Riggs Saltbox House, is on Main Street of what is now Ledgewood. The King Store is one of the most intact of the general stores that served Morris Canal boat crews and their families. In operation for the life of the canal, the store features period merchandise on the shelves, a built-in icebox to preserve perishables and a rope-operated wooden hoisting wheel to move merchandise.

A recent addition is a replica of the original Drakesville Post Office. King’s family lived in an apartment above the store until his fortunes improved. He then built the Victorian/Queen House next door for his wife and daughter. Louise King lived in the house her father built until her death in 1975.

Together the buildings tell the story of the people who lived and worked on the canal. Open the first Sunday of each month except in the dead of winter, it features volunteer docents who educate visitors on the marketplace of the 1800s and live in the Victorian era.
