This past December brought several significant Arctic blasts to northern New Jersey, creating conditions that have many eager to enjoy activities like skating, ice fishing, and snowmobiling on Lake Hopatcong. Before venturing out, however, it is critical to understand how to assess ice conditions and to remember that no ice is ever completely safe. Changing temperatures, snow cover, currents, and other unpredictable factors can quickly weaken ice that may appear stable. Being informed about ice safety and knowing how to respond in an emergency can make a life-saving difference.
To help you prepare, we have compiled a collection of articles and videos that share practical guidance on ice safety and best practices for navigating frozen lakes. We encourage you to review these resources carefully before participating in any ice-related activity. If you are uncertain about conditions, the safest choice is to stay off the ice. If in doubt, don't go out.
Last winter, New Jersey State Troopers received critical ice rescue training on Lake Hopatcong. You can watch the NBC New York video HERE.
