Lake Appreciation Month: One Simple Question, Countless Answers

July 01, 2026| Community, People

By: Lake Hopatcong Foundation

Lake Hopatcong means something a little different to everyone.

In honor of Lake Appreciation Month, we asked each member of our staff one simple question:

What do you appreciate about Lake Hopatcong?

Here's what they had to say.

"I appreciate the way spending time at Lake Hopatcong, whether on a bench, in a kayak, or from a boat, can turn a bad day into a good day and a good day into an even better one." - Caitlin Doran, Development Director

"I appreciate the feeling of peace you get while soaring across the water on a boat. It always puts the biggest smile on my face. Even when the ride gets bumpy or I end up getting splashed, it only makes the experience more fun!" - Faith Bulger, Environmental Stewardship Intern

"I appreciate that Lake Hopatcong always feels full of life. I love noticing the wildlife, the plants growing beneath the surface, and how the lake changes throughout the year. It reminds me what an incredible ecosystem this really is."  - Millena Galatioto, Environmental Stewardship Intern

"I appreciate the opportunity to help others discover and appreciate Lake Hopatcong. Watching people experience its beauty, ecology, and importance, and seeing that appreciation grow right before my eyes is incredibly rewarding. The lake has given me something I'm truly passionate about, and I love sharing that passion through education while inspiring others to care for and protect this amazing resource." - Patrick Krudop, Education and Outreach Director

"I appreciate seeing how our community shows up for the lake, no matter what. Through the good times and the challenging ones, people come together to support Lake Hopatcong and work together to make it the best lake in New Jersey." - Kyle Richter, Executive Director

"I appreciate that my mom grew up on the lake, and thanks to my grandparents living there, I was able to create many of those same memories. Jumping off the dock, boat rides, catching my first fish, watching sunsets, and Sunday family dinners with all my cousins around a long table overlooking the lake are moments I'll always cherish. I hope I can pass those same summer memories on to my future kids." - Anna Smith, Administrative Assistant

"I appreciate that no matter how busy life gets, the lake has a way of encouraging you to slow down, look around, and simply be present." - Holly Odgers, Communications Director

Ask ten people what they appreciate about Lake Hopatcong, and you'll probably get ten different answers. For some, it's a place to make memories. For others, it's where they find peace, connect with nature, or give back to the community. That's another thing we really appreciate about the lake!

This Lake Appreciation Month, we invite you to ask yourself what you appreciate about Lake Hopatcong.

There are countless answers, and each one is part of what makes this lake such a special place.

Happy Lakes Appreciation Month!
