Protect Our Lake With Good Septic Maintenance

September 12, 2025| Education, Environment

By: Holly Odgers

Did you know September 15-19 is SepticSmart Week? This nationwide initiative by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is about educating us on the importance of understanding and maintaining our septic systems. Proper septic maintenance can save money, safeguard public health, and protect our beautiful lake!

Many homes around Lake Hopatcong still rely on septic systems, and these systems can have an impact on our environment. They contribute nutrients to the lake that can lead to algal blooms and weed growth. But here's the good news: homeowners have the power to make a difference!

By following local ordinances and taking proper care of our septic systems, we can minimize their environmental impact on the lake. It's a small step that collectively has a big impact on the health of Lake Hopatcong.

To help get started on the path to being SepticSmart, we've included some tips on how to be a good septic owner as well as some Quick Tip videos to learn how your septic system works, what not to put down the drain, when to test and pump, and more.

Get SepticSmart, and let's protect Lake Hopatcong together.
