Spring checklist for boaters

March 24, 2022| Safety

By: Holly Odgers

Start the boating season right by getting your boat on the water safely with this Spring Commissioning Checklist from BoatUS. This comprehensive checklist will take you through each of the major systems of your boat to help ensure a trouble-free boating season. In addition, always be sure to check your owners’ manual and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines, especially those for the engine.

To help make boating as safe as possible, both the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons have certified vessel examiners who will perform free vessel safety checks. A vessel safety check usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending upon the size of your boat. There is no charge, and there are no consequences if you don't pass. You can find out if there will be a scheduled vessel safety check event near you by contacting your local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons. You can also request an individual vessel safety check at cgaux.org/vsc.

And once you're ready to go, make sure to have your boating license, boat registration, and N.J. boating safety certificate on board.

Happy (and safe) boating!
