Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa)

Black cohosh is a striking woodland native that creates a strong vertical statement in a shade or border garden. The tall flower spires stand out in front of a darker background and provide late summer blooms when other woodland flowers have faded. This plant does well in shade. Black cohosh has an odor that deters some insects. Black cohosh is a host plant for several butterflies, including the Spring Azure, Holly Blue, and Appalachian Azure.

In the past, the roots were used to treat various conditions, ranging from snakebite and lung inflammation to the pains of childbirth.
