Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)

Black-eyed Susan is tough, beautiful, and tolerates clay soils well. While other plants fold in the heat of summer, it retains luxuriant deep green foliage and bright yellow blooms with dark centers. The flowers were used to make yellow dye. Very attractive to butterflies, pollinators, and birds.

The plant and flowers were historically used as a medicinal herb by Native Americans to treat colds and more.
