Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum)

Boneset produces numerous large white or purple flower clusters throughout summer. The nectar of the flowers attracts butterflies and bees.

A favorite medicine of Native Americans, it was historically used as a cure-all in the United States for the common cold, coughs, and various other ailments. The advent of aspirin in the 20th century displaced Boneset as a popular remedy. Though its effectiveness has been debated in recent years, the leaves were believed to be useful in setting bones and were wrapped with bandages around splints.
