Common Milkweed is a wildlife-friendly perennial. Rounded clusters of fragrant, pinkish-purple flowers bloom June to August. It grows 3' to 4' tall and does well in poor, dry soils. It spreads easily and is best used in wildlife gardens, and meadows. The nectar is an important food source for butterflies, native bees, bumblebees, and honeybees.
The plant was long used historically in natural remedies, including removing warts with a topical treatment made from the milky white sap, and chewing the roots to cure dysentery.
