New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)

With magnificent blooms ranging from blue-purple to lavender-pink, New England Aster is a highlight of the late season landscape. Easily grown in a broad range of conditions, it thrives in full sun or light shade, and in all but the driest soils. The leaves and flowers are edible.It provides a critical fall nectar source for pollinators, especially Monarch butterflies as they prepare for fall migration to Mexico.

It was historically used by Native Americans for a number of medicinal purposes, including to treat respitory issues and as a digestive aid.
