New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)

With magnificent blooms ranging from blue-purple to lavender-pink, New England Aster is a highlight of the late season landscape. Easily grown in a broad range of conditions, it thrives in full sun or light shade, and in all but the driest soils. The leaves and flowers are edible (though not widely consumed). It provides a critical fall nectar source for pollinators, especially monarch butterflies as they prepare for fall migration to Mexico.

It was historically used by Native Americans for a number of medicinal purposes, including to treat respiratory issues and as a digestive aid.
