Purple coneflower grows easily and blooms profusely for up to two months in mid to late summer and will sometimes re-bloom in the fall. The flowers are a favorite nectar source for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. In late summer, the seeds of the purple coneflower attract goldfinches and other birds.
Highly valued as a medicinal herb by Native Americans and early European settlers, it was used to treat wounds, boils, toothaches, snakebite, and a host of ailments.
