The Lake-Friendly Living program is a community initiative designed to help residents reduce the impact of stormwater runoff and support a healthier Lake Hopatcong. Stormwater runoff—water from rain or snow that flows over surfaces or into storm drains—often carries pollutants like excess nutrients, chemicals, and sediment. When left unmanaged, it can harm water quality, endanger aquatic ecosystems, and impact both public health and recreational use.
Being "lake friendly" means actively taking steps to protect Lake Hopatcong through responsible daily practices and property management. Whether you're maintaining your yard, winterizing your driveway, or caring for your vehicle or septic system, your actions can make a difference.
At the heart of the program is the Lake Friendly Interview, a brief online survey that evaluates how lake-friendly your property is.
Your responses earn points (up to 33 total), and your score is followed by a personalized email with helpful suggestions and resources tailored to your property. There are no penalties for participation or low scores—the goal is education and improvement.
