Last July, I applied for the Communications Intern position at the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, and in August, I was hired.
Very quickly, I learned that this was going to be a great learning experience. Holly, the Communications Director, told me that every day would bring something new, and how right she was. Within my first week, I was taught how to work on our website, took an eco cruise aboard the Floating Classroom, and watched interested visitors receive tours of the historic 1911 station that serves as our office and explore the native gardens outside.
One of my favorite parts of my time with the Foundation was discovering what new events we’d be working on next. Being able to assist with the Lake Loop, the Block Party, the Greg Hildebrandt Art Exhibit, and the Gala was interesting and exciting. I also loved seeing who would walk through the doors, whether it was a member, someone new to the community, or a familiar face like Marty Kane.
The team at the foundation is made up of some of the most dedicated, passionate, and kind people I have had the good fortune to work alongside. My time here has been both a personal and professional boon, giving me the chance to meet people from diverse backgrounds while building new skills and expanding my capabilities. The experience has been invaluable. I’ve gained insight into web design, learned the ins and outs of coordinating our weekly newsletter (which takes a lot more work than you might think!), and helped develop new digital tools, including our online native garden resource.
I also enjoyed sharpening some of my existing skills, like building an archive of the Foundation’s press, writing articles, photographing events, and subtitling videos.
Even though I am moving on, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have worked here; I will carry the skills learned here forward to the positions I hold in the future as I continue my career. I’m excited to see what the Lake Hopatcong Foundation does in the future.
Thanks for everything!
