Be part of the plastic pollution solution

July 05, 2024| Environment

By: Holly Odgers

It's Plastic Free July! We’re excited to join millions of people worldwide in reducing plastic waste this month, and we invite you to participate all month long and beyond to protect our lake and the environment.

What is Plastic Free July?

Plastic Free July is a global initiative that challenges individuals, communities, and businesses to reduce their use of single-use plastics for the entire month. This movement, started by the Plastic Free Foundation in 2011, aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution and inspire action towards more sustainable practices.

Why Participate?

Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. Single-use plastics, such as bottles, bags, straws, and packaging, often end up in our waterways, including Lake Hopatcong. These plastics can break down into microplastics, which harm aquatic life and can even enter our food chain. By reducing our reliance on single-use plastics, we can help protect our water resources for future generations.

How You Can Get Involved

Participating in Plastic Free July is easier than you might think. Here are some simple yet impactful ways to reduce your plastic footprint:

  1. Use reusable cups and bottles instead of disposable ones.
  2. Choose metal or glass straws over plastic straws.
  3. Properly dispose of fishing lines and nets after use.
  4. Take all your belongings and trash with you when leaving recreation areas.
  5. Reduce plastic packaging by buying in bulk.
  6. Patronize businesses that prioritize sustainable practices and offer plastic-free options.

Plastic Free July is a great opportunity to introduce small changes that can make a big difference for the environment. For more great tips on going plastic-free,  visit this post by the New York League of Conservation Voters.

Join us in making a difference this Plastic Free July. Together, we can protect Lake Hopatcong and ensure it remains vibrant and healthy for all to enjoy.
