More dock signs for a safer lake

September 23, 2020| Safety

By: Melanie Wedemeier

The B-Safe Dock Numbering Program was established on Lake Hopatcong in 2016 with the aim of increasing safety on the lake. The signs are designed to help emergency personnel efficiently respond by land or water. Each sign is linked to a 9-1-1 street address, providing emergency personnel with an accurate on-water location. Below are some stats on how this program has taken shape in its fifth year.

There has been a slow and steady increase in signage on lakefront properties over the past few years. For 2020, we saw about a 3 percent increase. While this may seem like a small percentage, it works out to a total of 74 more dock signs purchased since the fall of 2019!

Out of the nearly 2,000 lakefront properties, 818, or 42 percent, have purchased a B-SAFE Dock Number Sign. Please help spread the word as we work toward a goal of 50 percent of lakefront homes!

Of the four municipalities around the lake, Hopatcong and Jefferson (Lake Hopatcong), have the greatest number of properties with dock numbers as they have the most lakefront homes. Mt. Arlington and Roxbury have the least number of lakefront homes, but the highest percentage of homes with dock numbers at 44 percent and 47 percent respectively!

We are thrilled with the response to this important safety initiative and thank all who have purchased a sign to assist in keeping everyone safe on our lake. B-SAFE dock number signs are available for purchase HERE. Please note that orders placed in the fall and winter will not be filled until spring. For those who ordered a sign between June and September, orders are currently being processed and should be arriving in your mail in early October.

B-SAFE everyone!
