Improve Lake Safety by Ordering a B-SAFE Dock Number

May 18, 2026| Community, Safety

By: Donna Macalle-Holly

B-SAFE (Blue Signs Are for Emergencies) dock numbers are small signs that make a big difference on the water. These blue signs with reflective white numbers connect a lakefront property’s “lake address” to its official 9-1-1 street address, helping emergency responders quickly locate emergencies on or near the water.

If an emergency happens on the lake, ice, shoreline, or nearby property, callers can simply provide the nearest dock number to emergency dispatchers for a faster and more accurate response.

B-SAFE dock numbers do not contain any personal information and can be mounted on your dock, boathouse, post, or tree—anywhere clearly visible from the water.

Dock numbers also make thoughtful housewarming, holiday, or host gifts for lakefront homeowners. All you need is the property’s street address to place an order.

Ordering is easy! Dock numbers can now be ordered at any time throughout the year and are typically delivered within a few weeks.

Thank you for helping make the lake safer, one sign at a time.

How the B-SAFE Program Works
  • In an emergency on the water, ice, or shoreline, call 9-1-1.

  • Locate the nearest B-SAFE dock number and provide it to the dispatcher.

  • Emergency responders can quickly identify and respond to the location.

  • Lakefront property owners can also report emergencies from land, allowing dispatchers to connect the street address with the water location.

  • Posted dock numbers also help friends, family, and visitors easily identify your property from the lake.
