Each year, National Volunteer Week offers an opportunity to recognize the people who make our work possible. At the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, our volunteers are more than just helping hands. They are educators, stewards, community connectors, and scientists who bring our mission to life in meaningful and lasting ways.
From leading field trip stations to monitoring water quality and supporting community events, their impact can be felt across every corner of our work. Whether they’re introducing students to lake ecology for the first time or helping us send letters to better connect with our community, our volunteers play a critical role in helping people connect with the environment.
For many, that connection runs deep.

Cliff Lundin has spent his entire life on Lake Hopatcong—decades of observation, appreciation, and dedication. His volunteer work spans across multiple programs, from our Foating Classroom to harmful algal bloom monitoring and community events. His motivation is rooted in both experience and a forward-looking sense of responsibility.
“I have lived at and have thoroughly enjoyed Lake Hopatcong for all of my 75 years,” Cliff shared. “I volunteer to ensure that current and future generations can continue to enjoy the lake, as I have known it.”
Through his work aboard the Floating Classroom, Cliff helps students understand the science behind the lake, called limnology, something he notes didn’t even exist as a formal field when he was younger.
“When students understand the lake, they understand the importance of protecting it,” he said. “They begin to see how every human activity in the watershed can impact water quality.”
Cliff’s contributions also extend into scientific research. His 1975 master’s thesis marked the first comprehensive study of water quality in Lake Hopatcong, laying the groundwork for decades of continued environmental efforts. Today, he remains actively involved in monitoring and stewardship.
“Each and every time that I am in my kayak, canoe, or boat, I am a ‘water watcher,’” he said. “We must be constantly vigilant to observe what is happening on the lake.”
For Cliff, volunteering is not just about giving back—it’s also about staying connected.
That same sense of joy and connection is something Pam Smith experiences every time she volunteers.

“Volunteering with the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is always such a rewarding experience,” she said. “I make it a priority to set aside time in my schedule, and it is so worth it every time.”
Pam is a familiar face at our educational programs, where she helps students engage directly with the natural world. For her, some of the most memorable moments come from watching curiosity turn into excitement.
“I love watching the kids smile when they see the classroom lesson come together with the field trip and realize how it’s all connected,” she shared. “It’s always amusing to see how hesitant they are at first to get close and be hands-on with the river insects, but within minutes they’re right up close, completely in awe.”
Beyond the educational impact, Pam values the sense of community that comes with volunteering.
“I also enjoy getting to know the other volunteers and the great conversations that come from our shared interest in volunteering and the environment,” she said. “Spending time outdoors, seeing the wildlife, and contributing in a meaningful way makes every experience memorable.”
Together, volunteers like Cliff and Pam represent the heart of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation. Their dedication, knowledge, and enthusiasm not only strengthen our programs but also inspire others to get involved and take an active role in protecting our natural resources.
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we extend our sincere gratitude to all of our volunteers (and there are hundreds!). Your time, passion, and commitment make a lasting difference not only for the lake but also for every student, visitor, and community member who benefits from your work.
Thank you for everything you do.
