One of the things I love about New Jersey's largest lake is that there's always something new to discover.
Whether you've spent years on the lake or are exploring it from a kayak for the first time, there are beautiful views, interesting landmarks, and fascinating history waiting around every bend. That's why I'm excited to share our new Lake Hopatcong Water Trails.
Designed for paddlers, these self-guided routes offer a fun way to explore Lake Hopatcong while discovering its natural features, notable landmarks, and plenty of history. Each route includes your choice of an interactive Google or OuterSpatial map featuring public launch locations, photos, and detailed information about points of interest along the way. For those who prefer a downloadable or printed resource, a PDF guide is also available, complete with route maps, historical information, site descriptions, and other useful details.
If you're looking for a quiet paddle with limited boat traffic, the Landing Channel Water Trail is a great place to start. Once a busy transportation corridor for steamboats carrying visitors around Lake Hopatcong, the channel is now a calm cove well suited for less experienced paddlers and wildlife viewing. Along the route, you'll discover a floating island, remnants of the lake's steamboat era, and a small cove featuring the remains of an early boathouse and log cabin.
For those looking to venture a little farther, the Inlets & Aisles Water Trail explores a scenic stretch of our lake's western shoreline. This 4.6-mile out-and-back route winds through sheltered waters, narrow inlets, and around islands, showcasing areas rich in wildlife and local history while offering a different perspective on parts of the lake many people rarely see. More than 5 miles of optional extensions provide additional opportunities for exploration.
Before heading out, be sure to visit our Water Trails page for route information, paddling regulations, safety tips, and guidance on protecting our waters from aquatic invasive species and respecting private property.
Whether you're planning a peaceful morning paddle, an afternoon adventure with friends, or simply looking for a new way to experience the lake, we hope these Water Trails inspire you to get out and explore Lake Hopatcong.
