Volunteers needed for floating wetland island project

June 03, 2022| Environment, People

By: Kyle Richter

The Lake Hopatcong Foundation, in collaboration with the Lake Hopatcong Commission and Princeton Hydro, will be installing a series of Floating Wetland Islands on Lake Hopatcong and we need your help!

Floating Wetland Islands are constructed of recycled plastic material and are planted with a variety of native wetland vegetation, which grows down into the water column where they take up nutrients, helping to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus levels in the lake. This results in reducing the nutrient pool available for cyanobacteria and other nuisance algae growth.

Volunteers will assist with adding soil to the islands, planting vegetation, and preparing the islands for launch. This volunteer opportunity will be on land, volunteers will NOT get into the lake. We have a couple of shifts at two different locations available. Come and assist with what you can, for as long as you can!

WHEN/WHERE:

  • Wednesday, June 8, 2022 – 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at Hopatcong State Park
  • Thursday, June 9, 2022 – 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at Ashley Cove

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • Please bring plenty of water and a snack.
  • Don’t forget your Sunscreen!
  • We will have some gardening gloves on hand, but if you have a favorite pair, please feel free to bring them.

Sign up here!

We're looking forward to a great day lakeside with this water quality project! If you have any questions about this volunteer opportunity please feel free to contact Kyle at kyle@lakehopatcongfoundation.org or 973-663-2500.

As we get closer to the date we will send out more information and logistics to those who have signed up to help.
