Choose to Refuse and Protect Our Water

July 15, 2025| Community, Environment

By: Andrew Dollberg

Have you heard of Plastic Free July? It’s a global movement that started in 2011 to help people reduce single-use plastics in their everyday lives. Millions of people now take part each year, finding simple ways to cut back on plastic waste.

Reducing plastic waste helps keep streets, water bodies, and communities cleaner. As a result, this is also a great way to help protect the lake we love and the surrounding environment!

Why does it matter?

Single-use plastics — things like bottles, bags, straws, and packaging — often end up as litter in our streets and parks. From there, they can wash into rivers, lakes, and oceans. Over time, these plastics break down into tiny particles called microplastics, which can be eaten by fish and other wildlife. These tiny bits of plastic are now found almost everywhere — from fresh snowfall in Antarctica to even inside our own bodies.

So reducing plastic use isn’t just about keeping places looking clean. It’s also about protecting wildlife, safeguarding our drinking water, and looking out for our own health.

How you can take part

Plastic Free July is the perfect time to try small changes that add up. Here are some simple ideas:

  •  Bring your own bottle or mug. You’ll cut down on plastic bottles and disposable cups.
  • Say no to plastic cutlery and straws. Use your own or go without.
  • Choose reusable shopping bags. Keep one in your car or bag so you’re never without it.
  • Store leftovers in glass or metal containers. Skip the plastic wrap and disposable containers.
  • Buy in bulk when you can. Less packaging means less waste.
  • Pick up litter when you see it. Even small actions help prevent plastics from washing into storm drains and local waters.

It’s all about doing what you can, when you can. Each small step helps protect our environment, keeps plastic out of the water we rely on, and contributes to healthier communities for everyone.
