Become a Volunteer Trail Maintainer

May 06, 2026| Community, Environment, Recreation

By: Donna Macalle-Holly

Looking for a simple, rewarding way to get outside, give back, and make a visible difference in your community? Join the volunteer trail maintainer team for the Lake Hopatcong Trail!

Trail maintainers play an important role in keeping the Lake Hopatcong Trail safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone. The work is flexible and low-key—focused on light stewardship such as checking a section of trail, clearing small debris when needed, and reporting conditions so the trail stays in great shape year-round.

Choose Your Trail Section

The trail is divided into easy-to-manage North, Central, and South sections, so you can select an area that’s close to home or simply one you enjoy visiting.

Simple Seasonal Check-Ins

After signing up, you’ll receive a Trail Maintainer manual and access to a simple, online trail maintenance reporting form.

Volunteers are asked to check their section at least once in the spring and once in the fall, with additional visits after storms always appreciated. Reports take just a few minutes and help us respond to trail needs.

Easy, Flexible, and Beginner-Friendly

No prior experience is needed. Most maintenance visits are light and manageable, and we can provide tools if needed.

This is also a great way to enjoy the outdoors with others. Feel free to bring a friend or family member and make it a shared experience.

Helpful guidance is available in our Volunteer Handbook.

Benefits of Volunteering
  • Enjoy time outdoors on a beautiful regional trail.
  • Give back in a simple, meaningful way.
  • Help protect and improve a community asset.
  • Stay connected to nature, close to home.

Whether you check your section once a season or more often, every visit helps keep the trail in great condition.

Want to Get Involved?

We’re always looking for new volunteers who enjoy time outdoors and want to make a visible difference in the community. Whether you can help a little or a lot, every effort counts.

If you have questions or want to get involved, we’d love to hear from you. You can reach us at info@lakehopatcongfoundation.org

Thank you for helping care for the Lake Hopatcong Trail. We couldn’t do it without you!
